Rev. Fr. Joe Keke, who was kidnapped on May 20 at St. Vincent Ferrer Malunfashi Parish in Katsina State, under Sokoto Diocese, North-West, Nigeria has been released by his abductors. The Director of Communications, Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Fr. Chris Omotosho broke the news of the the release of the 74-year-old priest in a short statement made available to the Media Office of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Abuja. The terse statement reads: “Dear Frs, Srs & the entire People of God, this is to officially announce that Very Rev. Fr. Joe Keke has been received from the hands of his kidnappers. He is currently receiving medical. We thank God for your prayers. Continue to keep him in your prayers”. Although Fr. Omotosho did not revealed if ransom was paid to secure the priest, Fr. Keke was kidnapped alongside Fr Alphonsus Bello, who was killed immediately and was buried on Tuesday, June 1 in Kaduna. Reacting to the news of the release of Fr. Keke, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most. Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah confirmed to the CSN Media Office in Abuja that he spoke with the priest himself as he said, “The release of Joe has given us great joy. I spoke with him and his voice is strong and we can only thank God and pray that, somehow, this national humiliation and tragedy will come to an end”.
